Wiking 1:200 Ready Built Models
Introduction
The Wiking 1:200 scale ready built models always stayed in the
shadow of the SIKU ready built
models. Similar to Faller kits this brand did not satisfy my demand
in collectability and accuracy even in the early times of my
modelling history. I have ambivalent feelings towards the
collectability still today. Nontheless I added more Wikings to
my collections beyond models "I remember" (to have had in
my youth). And at least I updated the Wiking pages to my new
layout in November 2013 much earlier than the Siku pages. And
"on the job" I learned to like them more and more. Even in the
not just proficient shots the Constellation does look
surprisingly realistic (pictures right).
History
Wiking started in 1936 as "Wiking-Modellbau Peltzer & Peltzer"
in Lichterfelde district of Berlin, Germany. They produced
mainly waterline models of ships in 1:1250, later 1:1275 scale
and made larger scale ships on order, too. In 1938 they started
to make diecast military vehicles and aircraft in 1:200 scale in
plastic [ 6 ] That evolved during the war in
production of instructional and recognition models for the
military [ 1 ]
After WW 2 Wiking started production of civil vehicles in
plastic close to HO scale that evolved in the 50s to their
famous range of "Verkehrsmodelle" (traffic
models) [ 2 ].
In 1984 Wiking was taken over by the Sieper Group (Siku) [ 3
]. Current models produced by WIKING see their website (as
for October 2013) [ 4 ] .
After 1945 some new arcraft types were produced, but at the
beginning of the 60s the series was stopped. [ 5
]
From 1958 up to 1968 Wiking tried once more a series of 1:200
scale models. They were made of silver plastic or were painted
silver. This series did not sell good as well, so production was
stopped soon and 1968 distribution was discontinued. [ 5
]
This silver series of models ( some call them 'Silberlinge'
Silvers ) is treated here.
The "green" pre-war series and their reissues will not
be treated here.

Wiking 1:200 Ready Built Models
Introduction
Super Constellation
Convair CV-340. I got this model with Canadian Air Force decals
applied, which may not be original Wiking.
Thunderjet
The finish (layout) of the canopy from this fighter looks
far better than the cockpit windows of the airliners
Constellation and Convair above.
